The 29th ITU-R WP5D meeting held in Korea
TTA attended the 29th ITU-R WP5D meeting hosted by the Korean Ministry of Science and ICT held in the Millennium Hilton Hotel Seoul from January 31 to February 7. At the meeting, TTA played the leading role in discussing the international standard on fifth-generation (5G) mobile communication. ITU is an inter-government council under the United Nations dedicated to international frequency band distribution and technical standardization. The meeting was attended by 300 experts including government and industry delegates from 50 countries, and it attracted experts’ attention across the world as it was held just ahead of the launch of 5G trial services during the PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games. The Korean delegation consisted of 28 people from the Ministry of Science and ICT, the National Radio Research Agency, TTA, Samsung Electronics, KT, the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, Yonsei University, and Korea University. This occasion was particularly meaningful to Korea, since at this meeting it proposed the world’s first 5G candidate technology to ITU to take the initiative in international standardization. The Korean 5G candidate technology embraces the 5G millimeter wave technology that is considered to have the technological advantage and the frequency bandwidths to be serviced in Korea (3.5 GHz and 28 GHz). In June 2017, the nation surveyed local industries, proposed 5G technical requirements and evaluation processes to ITU-R and had them adopted. The next ITU-R WP5D meeting will be held in Mexico from June 13 to 20, 2018.
