Dong Il Seo, CEO of VoleR Creative, and SangKwon Jeong, CEO of JoyFun who are, respectively, the chair and the head of the operating committee in the Immersive Mixed Reality Tech Forum supported by the TTA were elected as chair and secretary, respectively, at the IEEE-SA(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Standards Association) P3333.3 Working Group, which was newly established on December 12, 2016. The IEEE-SA is a de facto standards developing organization that establishes and provides practical international standards in the fields of information and communications, computing, and electronic components. The IEEE-SA P3333.3 Working Group was created to conduct research on various factors affecting humans (human factors*), such as dizziness and motion sickness resulting from the use of head-mounted displays (HMDs**) during virtual reality service, and to establish international standards for relieving such symptoms. The IEEE-SA P3333.3 Working Group plans to start full-fledged standardization activities beginning in 2017, and major Chinese companies such as Huawei and ZTE are expected to participate in the process in addition to global virtual reality firms such as Facebook, Intel, SONY, HTC, etc.

In the meantime, Immersive Interreality Tech Forum, which was created in Korea for the standardization of virtual reality (VR), made three cases as forum standards including “Terms and Definitions for VR-Service-Based HMD,” “HMD Device Specification for Virtual Reality by Mobile Phone,” and “HMD Device Specification for Virtual Reality with PC or Console.” In addition, as the forum went further, it suggested that the ICT Standardization Committee of the TTA (PG-610 Digital Contents Project Group) establish the standards, which were approved and adopted as Telecommunications Technology Association standards at the 89th Technical Assembly held last December.

*Human factors: A scientific research area that covers theories, principles, data, and methods used to develop human-optimized devices and systems.
**HMD (head-mounted display): A type of display worn on the head that is positioned close to the eyes and projects stereoscopic(3D) vision induced by parallax images. The user can experience virtual reality or augmented reality, feeling three dimensions of space.
