The 121st JTC 1/SC 29/WG 11 (MPEG) International Standardization Meeting

The 121st JTC 1/SC 29/WG 11 (MPEG) International Standardization Meeting was held in Kimdaejung Convention Center in Gwangju from January 20 to 26. The meeting was attended by 376 MPEG experts from 22 member countries to discuss international standardization of the MPEG multimedia video technology. In particular, they discussed detailed technical supplementations to the Internet of Media Things (IoMT) where Korea is playing leading roles. The IoMT standard is applicable to mobile and wearable devices, and the industry is expecting many benefits from the use of the standard. Another topic covered at the meeting was the standard on virtual and augmented reality applications that will have strong ripple effects on various industries. In addition, the meeting was accompanied by subsidiary events such as the MPEG Workshop on Immersive Services Roadmap designed for MPEG-related industries, developers, and the public, and the Omnidirectional Media Format Developer’s Day. At the MPEG Workshop on Immersive Services Roadmap, strategies for MPEG standard development for the coming five years were discussed, and local and international speakers gave presentations about immersive media technology and standard development. The next (122nd) meeting will be held in San Diego, California, USA in April 2018.
