Industry & Government Initiative to develop the global 5G market in the 28 GHz spectrum band

June 12th 2017: Leading administrations and mobile broadband industry companies have taken an initiative to develop the global 5G market in the 28 GHz spectrum band.

Government representatives from Canada, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Sweden and the USA as well as 5G industry leaders met in Canada in June to share information on recent developments related to the 28 GHz band and discuss how to enable a global mass market for 5G equipment and services in this band.
The companies are supporting the 26.5-29.5 GHz (28 GHz; “5G Frontier band”) band for early 5G implementation/deployment by 2018 and are encouraging Administrations to harmonize the technical and regulatory conditions of the 28 GHz band to facilitate economies of scale.

The industry is developing chip-sets, devices, and infrastructure equipment based on 3GPP specifications which are on track to enable the first deployments of commercial 5G systems in the band 28 GHz with numerous trials already ongoing in the band in several countries.
With the recent agreement in 3GPP to develop standards around the 28 GHz band, the group is working together to enable 5G to become a commercial reality by 2020.
Some countries have already made 28 GHz spectrum available for 5G in 2016 and others are taking steps now to make it available in the near future.  In addition, the group looks forward to working with other countries to also enable 26 GHz for 5G in the future. This initiative has a clear objective to realise the global 5G vision and in doing so hopes to accelerate 5G deployments around the world.
